Actor Danny Masterson, 47, known for his role in That ’70s Show, has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for rape.
Danny, who was convicted of two counts of rape against two women, was sentenced by Judge Charlene F. Olmedo in Los Angeles Superior Court on September 7.
During the trial, the judge told defendant Danny, “Ms. Masterson, you are not a victim; your act 20 years ago took away a person’s choice and voice. That act was a crime, and that is why you are here now,” he ruled.
The victims, who are also former members of the Church of Scientology, which Danny is a member of, attended the hearing in Los Angeles. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon praised the bravery shown by the victims throughout the process.
He said, “This has been a long and difficult road for the victims. Not only did they survive their defendants’ abuse, but they made it through a system that often gives victims the cold shoulder. I hope that this verdict will bring them peace and that their courage will serve as an example to others. I would also like to thank the entire trial team. It was a very difficult case, but thanks to the hard work, experience, and dedication of the team, justice has finally been served.
Meanwhile, Danny’s attorney, Sean Hawley, seems confident that “the conviction will be overturned. The errors that occurred in this verdict were serious and unfortunately not based on the evidence.” I have tremendous respect for the jury in this case and for the entire justice system, but sometimes mistakes are made at trial, and that’s what happened here. The defendant did not commit the crimes for which he was convicted, and our appellate lawyers, who are among the finest in the country, are confident that these convictions will be overturned,” he said in a statement.
