Tragedy struck during the NFL Week 17 Monday Night Game between the Bills and Bengals in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 2.
Hamlin got up once, but immediately collapsed and fell to the ground.
Bills safety Damar Hamlin (24=183 cm, 91 kg) collapsed immediately after attempting to tackle Bengals WR Tee Higgins (23=193 cm, 99 kg) at the 9:02 mark of the first quarter, and was given CPR on the spot for cardiopulmonary arrest. CPR was performed on the spot to save his life.
On this play, both men collided in the helmet area. Hamlin stood up at one point but immediately collapsed and fell to the ground.
He was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Cincinnati 16 minutes later in critical condition, although his condition has recovered slightly. The game was suspended and postponed with the Bengals leading 7-3. No details were given as to when the game would resume.
The Bills, who lead the AFC East, are 12-3, while the Bengals, who lead the North, are 11-4. This game was an important one in the battle for the AFC’s top seed, but due to an unforeseen occurrence, the game did not take place.
On the field, Bills players knelt in a circle and prayed for Hamlin, but QB Josh Allen (26) was in shock, covering his face with his hands. Several players were in tears and were no longer in a position to continue the game.
Hamlin is a native of Pennsylvania. He was selected by the Bills in the sixth round (212th overall) of the 2021 draft out of the University of Pittsburgh to join the NFL and started 13 of 15 games in his second season.
In the Bills’ 2007 season opener, tight end (TE) Kevin Everett, then 25, was taken to the hospital with a neck injury just after the start of the second half. He survived, but was left paralyzed.
