Armie Hammer, the alleged sexual assault, prosecutors will not prosecute.

Actor Armie Hammer, known for his roles in films such as Call Me By Your Name, has been accused of rape by a woman with whom he had an affair over a four-year period from 2016 to 2020, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has dropped the case against Armie due to insufficient evidence.

After receiving the report, the LAPD conducted an investigation for approximately nine months, but concluded the entire investigation in December 2021 and referred the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for a final decision.

A spokesperson for the D.A.’s office commented on the decision, saying: ‘Sexual assault cases are often difficult to prove, so we assign our most experienced prosecutors to review the case. In this case, the prosecutor assigned to the case has conducted an extremely thorough review and has determined that there is insufficient evidence to charge Mr Hammer with a crime at this time’ and ‘We know that it is difficult for women to report a sexual assault. If we are unable to pursue a prosecution, our officers will still be available to those who wish to access the Authority’s victim support service. Due to the complexity of the relationship, we have been unable to prove non-consensual and forced sexual experiences and have been unable to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt”, she told US-based Page Six.

As the Prosecutor’s Office officer said, sexual assault cases are notoriously very difficult to prosecute. While US studies show that the probability of a rape accusation being false is between 2 and 10 per cent, according to RAINN, the largest US organisation against sexual violence, 5.7 per cent of all cases lead to arrest, 0.7 per cent to conviction as a felony and 0.6 per cent to incarceration. Even when prosecutors have conducted a thorough investigation, rape cases are difficult to prosecute because in many cases there are no witnesses, so it can be argued at trial that it was consensual, and in many cases, time has passed and evidence is scarce. Armie allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in 2017 and the police investigation began in 2021.

After this report came out, Armie wrote via Instagram, “I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped me this time. I am so grateful that the district attorney conducted a thorough investigation and came to the conclusion that there was no crime, which I have always supported. Now that the stigma has been cleared, I look forward to beginning the long and difficult process of reclaiming my life.”

Meanwhile, the female victim responded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office’s decision: ‘I am disappointed in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s decision not to prosecute Armie Hammer. I felt obligated to speak up and file a report to hold Armie accountable for all the harm and trauma he inflicted on me and to protect other women from experiencing similar abuse”, and “I have made a great sacrifice by speaking up and filing a damage report against Armie’s abuse. I have had to pay a huge price for speaking out against Army’s abuse and filing a report. (Since speaking out) I have received death threats, rape threats, countless attacks, outrageous and constant harassment. I believe that many of Army’s victims were afraid to come forward. My hope is that one day rapists will not be able to get away with it,” she expresses her disappointment.
