On Sunday, July 2, at approximately 8:45 p.m., a suspicious powder was discovered in the West Wing of the White House.

This led to the temporary closure of the facility and the simultaneous evacuation of all staff members. Shortly thereafter, the facility was declared safe and the evacuation was lifted. The powder was found by a Secret Service agent on patrol in an area that is also accessible to tourists.

A senior official from the Office of Legal Enforcement also told CBS that the substance was found in a warehouse routinely used by White House staff and guests to store cell phones. It should be noted that President Joe Biden and his family were visiting Camp David in Maryland at the time and were not at the White House.

The Washington Post reported that subsequent testing confirmed that the substance was cocaine. The Secret Service plans to conduct a full investigation into how the substance was brought into the White House, and will also check all entry records and cameras installed in the area where the cocaine was located to determine who was in and out of the building.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, cocaine is a Schedule II drug under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act, and although it is sometimes used as a local anesthetic, its distribution is carefully controlled and monitored by the DEA because it causes hallucinations and delusions and has a high abuse risk.

The West Wing is a large building that houses the Oval Office, the Oval Office, and the Crisis Management Office, as well as offices for the Vice President, the White House Chief of Staff, the Press Secretary, and hundreds of other staff members.
